How To Make Slow Cooker Asian-Style Pork

  1. Prepare the Slow Cooker: Put the sliced onion into your slow cooker and place the pork shoulder on top.
  2. Mix the Sauce: In a bowl, mix the rest of the ingredients except the cornflour (cornstarch), then pour this sauce over the pork. Season with salt and pepper, then cook on high for 3–4 hours, turning the pork at least twice during the cooking process.
  3. Rest the Pork: After cooking, remove the pork and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  4. Thicken the Sauce: Meanwhile, mix the cornflour (cornstarch) with a splash of water in a mug or small bowl until you form a thick paste. Add this paste to the sauce in the slow cooker and set to ‘reduce’ to thicken the sauce.
  5. Shred the Pork: Once the pork has rested, shred it with two forks and add it back to the now-thickened sauce.
  6. Serve: Serve the shredded pork sprinkled with chopped fresh chilli and sesame seeds, alongside rice.

Recipe Tips

  • Turn the pork regularly: To ensure even cooking, turn the pork at least twice during the cooking process to help it absorb the sauce and stay juicy.
  • Don’t skip the resting time: Letting the pork rest for 15 minutes after cooking helps it retain its moisture, making it easier to shred and more tender.
  • Thicken the sauce properly: Make sure to mix the cornflour (cornstarch) with cold water before adding it to the sauce to avoid lumps.
  • Adjust the sweetness: If you prefer a sweeter taste, add more honey. If you like it more savory, reduce the honey and increase the soy sauce.
  • Use fresh chilli for extra heat: Adjust the amount of fresh chilli to your liking. For a milder dish, remove the seeds before chopping.
