Slow Cooker Onion Jam Ingredients

  • 7 large onions, diced
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) of olive oil
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) of pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) of apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) of balsamic vinegar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons (7.5 ml) of salt
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of ground cinnamon

How To Make Slow Cooker Onion Jam

  1. Prep Your Onions: First things first, dice up those onions. If you’re using a slow cooker to caramelize them, toss them in, drizzle with olive oil, and set it on low. Let those onions cook slowly overnight to develop a deep, sweet flavor.
  2. Mix in the Magic: Once your onions are caramelized, it’s time to add the maple syrup, both vinegars, salt, and cinnamon. Just pour them all in and give it a good stir.
  3. Cook It Down: Now, let it all cook on low heat. Keep the lid off so the mixture can thicken up. This should take about 2 to 3 hours. You’re looking for a rich, jammy consistency.
  4. Blend to Perfection: Grab your immersion blender and carefully blend the mixture right in the slow cooker. Make sure you get it nice and smooth.
  5. Cool and Enjoy: All done? Let it cool down before you dig in. This onion jam is fantastic on pretty much anything – burgers, toast, you name it!

Can I Use Any Type of Onion for This Onion Jam?

Absolutely, you can use any type of onion you like for this recipe! Yellow onions are standard for their sweet flavor when caramelized, but feel free to experiment with red or white onions for a different taste profile.

Recipe Tips

  • Stir Occasionally: To prevent the onions from sticking to the bottom of your slow cooker, give them a good stir every now and then; this helps everything cook evenly.
  • Check Consistency: If the jam isn’t as thick as you like after the cooking time, leave it uncovered and cook a bit longer; slow and steady wins the race here.
  • Sweetness Control: Feel free to adjust the amount of maple syrup based on your sweetness preference; remember, you’re the boss of your sauce!
  • Spice It Up: Don’t shy away from adding a pinch of red pepper flakes if you like a bit of heat; it’s like giving your jam a little pep talk.

Recipe Variations

  • Different Vinegars: Mix up the flavors by using different types of vinegar like red wine vinegar or sherry vinegar; it’s like a little vinegary vacation for your taste buds!
  • Add Fruits: Throw in some chopped apples or pears during the last hour of cooking for a fruity twist; think of it as making new friends for your onions.
  • Herbal Notes: Fresh thyme or rosemary can add a lovely herbal note to the jam; it’s like your jam just got a degree in herbology.
  • Whiskey Addition: For a bold twist, add a splash of whiskey towards the end of cooking; it’s like sending your onions to a rock concert!

What To Serve With Onion Jam

Serve your Onion Jam with grilled cheese sandwiches, roast pork, baked brie, goat cheese crostini, and Sweet Potato Wedges.

You can also pair it with pan-seared scallops and venison burgers for a delightful twist on classic dishes.

How To Store Leftover Onion Jam

In The Fridge:

For storing Onion Jam in the fridge, place it in a clean, airtight container. Make sure the lid is secure to keep the jam fresh. It can stay good for up to 2 weeks when stored properly in your refrigerator.

In The Freezer:

Onion Jam does not freeze well due to its high sugar and vinegar content. Freezing might change the texture and flavor, making it less enjoyable when thawed.

Have you canned this recipe to make it shelf stable? If so, can you tell me what you did to can it? If not, do you know if a recipe that can be canned?
      Thank you in advance,
      Roger

        Hey Roger,

I haven’t canned this recipe myself, but it should be possible with a few tweaks. Since it already has vinegar, that helps with preservation, but to be safe, you might want to add a bit more vinegar (maybe 1/4 cup extra) to increase the acidity. Then, you can use a water bath canning method.

        Here’s how I’d do it:

1 – Sterilize your jars by boiling them for about 10 minutes.
2 – Once the jam is done, fill the jars, leaving about 1/2 inch of space.
3 – Process the jars in a water bath for around 10 minutes (adjust for altitude if needed).

It should work well, but if you want to be super sure it’s safe, you can check the pH level or ask a local expert. Let me know if you give it a try—I’d love to hear how it turns out!
