  • 2 cups (224 g) frozen sliced okra, thawed
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ lb (227 g) large shrimp, peeled and deveined

How To Make Slow Cooker Sausage And Shrimp Cajun Stew

  1. Prepare the slow cooker: Place the sausage, onion, garlic, celery, and bell pepper in your 6-quart (6 L) slow cooker. Sprinkle in the flour and toss to coat.
  2. Add the liquids and seasoning: Add the tomatoes (with liquid), water, okra, cayenne pepper, and salt. Stir to combine.
  3. Cook the stew: Cover and cook for 3½ hours on high or 7 hours on low.
  4. Add shrimp: If cooking on low, turn your slow cooker to high, add the shrimp, cover, and cook for an additional 30 minutes.

Recipe Tips

  • Use thawed okra: Make sure to thaw the frozen okra before adding it to the stew. This helps it cook evenly and blend better with the other ingredients.
  • Adjust the spice level: If you prefer a milder stew, reduce the amount of cayenne pepper or skip it altogether.
  • Sauté the sausage and vegetables: For extra flavor, quickly sauté the sausage, onions, garlic, celery, and bell pepper before adding them to the slow cooker.
  • Check shrimp doneness: Add the shrimp towards the end of the cooking time. Overcooking the shrimp can make them tough, so keep an eye on them!
  • Don’t skip the flour: The flour helps to thicken the stew and gives it a nice, smooth texture. Be sure to sprinkle it over the sausage and veggies before cooking.
